Jerod Mayo had much to like about the New England Patriots rallying to pull off a last-second win over the New York Jets on Sunday at Gillette Stadium.

Despite coming out on top, the officiating in the contest got under Mayo’s skin.

The most glaring missed call came on the play in which Drake Maye suffered a concussion late in the first quarter. Maye scrambled up the field and as he gave himself up at the end of his run by going into a slide, he sustained a helmet-to-helmet blow to the head from Jets linebacker Jamien Sherwood.

No flag was thrown on the play, which made Patriots fans irate. It seemed Mayo felt similarly since he criticized the officials following New England’s 25-22 win.

“They didn’t call it,” Mayo said, per team-provided video. “I had conversations with them the entire game. I thought some of those calls were questionable. At the same time I have to go back and watch the film. We’ll have those conversations.”

Mayo didn’t discuss any other specific calls that rubbed him the wrong way as the Patriots actually won the penalty battle.

The Jets, who came into the game as the most penalized team in the league, certainly lived up to that billing. They committed eight penalties for 55 yards while the Patriots were flagged five times for 50 yards.

But the hit on Maye certainly will have implications on the Patriots as the rookie quarterback is now in the concussion protocol and his status for next Sunday’s game against the Tennessee Titans is unclear.

While Sherwood wasn’t penalized on the play, he might not come out of the situation completely unscathed. The NFL could decide to fine Sherwood this week for his dangerous tackle.
