Gerrit Cole wasn’t the only Yankees star who made a very costly mistake in the field Wednesday night.

Four batters before New York’s high-priced starting pitcher didn’t cover first base on the Dodgers’ first run-scoring play of World Series Game 5, Aaron Judge gave Los Angeles an extra out. With one on and no outs, the American League MVP favorite dropped a routine line drive that helped the visitors gain momentum in the fifth inning.

That frame proved to be the most pivotal in the Bronx, where Dave Roberts’ side erased a five-run deficit and rallied to secure a championship-clinching win. After New York’s season-ending loss, Judge opened up about his crucial misstep.

“That doesn’t happen, I think we got a different story tonight,” Judge told reporters, per the New York Post. “I just didn’t make it.”

The star slugger added: “It comes back to me. I’ve got to make the play and probably the other two don’t happen.”

Judge, who hadn’t made an error all season entering Wednesday, understandably took the demoralizing defeat pretty hard. The six-time All-Star believes the Yankees coming up short on baseball’s biggest stage will stay with him until the end of his days.
