One Big Takeaway From Bruins’ Unmitigated Ugly Loss Vs. Hurricanes

Jim Montgomery attempted to ignite the Boston Bruins offense by shuffling the forward lines for their matchup against the Carolina Hurricanes.

Unfortunately for Montgomery, it didn’t garner the results he was hoping for and the Bruins dropped a disastrous 8-2 decision at Lenovo Center.

Boston looked flat and lacked cohesiveness throughout the game. Most of their passes missed the mark, and they were unable to sustain any pressure in the offensive zone. The Bruins would gain the zone only to have the Hurricanes collapse on them and head back up the ice in transition.

The Hurricanes took over the game and never looked back when one bad minute doomed the Bruins in the first period. Carolina lit the lamp three times in the final three minutes of the opening frame.

Andrei Scvechnikov scored Carolina’s first power-play goal and former Bruins defenseman Dmitry Orlov potted his second goal of the season just 38 seconds later. The Hurricanes weren’t done — Martin Necas would add another power-play tally 14 seconds later.

Carolina scored three times on the power play. This is the third time this season that the Bruins have given up three goals while shorthanded.

Montgomery pulled starting goalie Jeremy Swayman after he gave up six goals on 22 shots through a period and a half. Of the six goals Swayman surrendered, two were the result of friendly fire. Attempting to make the block, Brandon Carlo ended up deflecting two pucks in behind his goaltender.

Joonas Korpisalo came in relief stopping 13 Carolina shots and giving up two goals in the third period.

The Bruins will look to get back to the win column when they travel to Philadelphia on Saturday to take on the Flyers. Puck drop from Wells Fargo Center is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET, and you can watch the game and an hour of pregame coverage on NESN.
