New Report Doesn’t Bode Well For Red Sox’s Potential Alex Bregman Pursuit

The Red Sox apparently will face very stiff competition if they plan to make a run at Alex Bregman.

Boston has been floated as a potential landing spot for Bregman, a defensively sound third baseman who swings an impactful right-handed bat. The Red Sox also have a bit of a connection to the 30-year-old, who they drafted out of high school in 2012 but could not sign.

Houston general manager Dana Brown recently stated his belief that the Astros “have a really good chance” of keeping the two-time All-Star with the organization he’s been a part of since 2015. But if the possibility of a continued marriage diminishes, two big spenders reportedly are ready to get involved.

“Word for now is, nothing’s close,” the New York Post’s Jon Heyman said of a possible new Bregman deal in Houston. “Bregman, who enhanced his opportunities with a big second half, could be a fit for either the Yankees or Mets, too.”

Both New York teams probably are inclined to add even more star power this offseason. That might be a necessary approach to get over the hump, as the 2024 World Series Los Angeles Dodgers figure to be even stronger next season when fully healthy.

Other priorities might keep the Red Sox out of the Bregman sweepstakes, too. One could argue Boston’s greatest point of emphasis this winter should be adding a frontline starter (or two).
