The Red Sox are among multiple teams in hot pursuit of Juan Soto, and an American League rival got to make an impression on the free agent.

Boston reportedly met with the 26-year-old in Los Angeles on Thursday. MassLive’s Sean McAdam reported that the three-hour meeting was “productive” and included president Sam Kennedy, chairman Tom Werner, chief baseball officer Craig Breslow and manager Alex Cora.

The All-Star outfielder came away “impressed” with the meeting that included a presentation of the club’s rich history of Dominican legends like Soto’s childhood hero David Ortiz. Financials weren’t discussed since the meeting was “largely introductory and informational,” and it got the Red Sox on the table with agent Scott Boras.

MLB Network’s Jon Heyman confirmed that Boston made an “impressive” presentation to Soto and added the Toronto Blue Jays also made a good impression on him, too. The MLB insider noted it’s still early in the process and other teams will meet with Soto in the “coming days.”

Toronto’s interest in Soto should not be surprising. Other than the fact that Soto one of the best hitters in baseball and is in the middle of his prime, the Blue Jays also were in on the Shohei Ohtani sweepstakes. Rumors were mixed on how close Toronto was to signing the Japanese superstar, but it’s clearly invested in trying to compete with the New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles like the Red Sox are.

What complicates things for the Blue Jays is they also need to decide if they want to re-sign Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who becomes a free agent in 2026. Their meeting with Soto might have also been a discussion about his fellow Dominican’s future in Toronto.

The New York clubs are expected to meet with Soto — even the Los Angeles Dodgers could try to get a meeting. Boston will have to wait and hope for a second meeting or that its pitch was good enough to entice the most prized free agent in the market.
