New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye tried to make it as easy as possible for Vederian Lowe.
After all, the offensive tackle isn’t used to running a route and coming down with a pass.
But the Patriots asked Lowe to do just that with 12:45 left in the fourth quarter in their 28-22 loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday at Gillette Stadium. Lowe reported as eligible as the Patriots brought on Sidy Sow as an extra lineman. Lowe faked a block before leaking out into the end zone, where he was left uncovered and caught a 4-yard touchdown pass from Maye.
Maye made sure to put plenty of air under the ball as it dropped softly into Lowe’s hands. The Patriots rookie signal-caller even thought it was a pass Mama Maye could have come down with, too.
“Yeah, good hands. He caught them all week,” Maye told reporters, per team-provided video. “I tried to give him a nice pass. I think hopefully my mom probably could have caught it.”

That certainly doesn’t take away from Lowe’s accomplishment as scoring a touchdown was a “dream come true” for the 6-foot-5, 315-pound lineman.
The Patriots dipped into their bags of tricks at the perfect time to pull the play off, and Maye, who completed 30-of-40 passes for 282 yards and two touchdowns and one interception, made sure to credit Lowe for helping catch the Rams off guard in that situation.
“I’m proud of V-Lowe, and I think we had some trickery,” Maye said. “I think that kind of gets lost in the NFL, some trickery, misdirection, things like that. I think it fooled these guys in the end zone.”
