The Boston Bruins made the decision to part ways with Jim Montgomery on Tuesday and promote Joe Sacco to interim head coach.

Bruins general manager Don Sweeney and team president Cam Neely expressed in statements announcing Montgomery’s dismissal how appreciative they were of Montgomery’s impact on the Original Six franchise over his two-plus seasons at the helm.

The Bruins also thanked Montgomery with a social media post.

“Thank you, Jim. We wish you and your family all the best moving forward,” the Bruins wrote on X.

Montgomery finished his tenure with the organization with a 120-41-23 record. Sixty-five of those wins came during a historic 2022-23 campaign — Montgomery’s first with Boston — as the Bruins set the NHL record for most victories in a single season.

But the team experienced shortcomings in the playoffs with Montgomery behind the bench. They went 9-11 in the postseason under Montgomery’s watch and never made it past the second round.

The Bruins got off to a slow 8-9-3 start this season, leading to Boston’s brass making the coaching change.
