NFL Rumors: Aaron Rodgers Returning To Jets Next Season Would Be ‘Shock’

The New York Jets already canned former head coach Robert Saleh and fired general manager Joe Douglas on Tuesday.

And it appears they are ready to say goodbye to star quarterback Aaron Rodgers at the end of this season.

ESPN’s Rich Cimini reported Tuesday that Jets owner Woody Johnson might not prefer to have Rodgers back for the 2025 season.

“One source said he’d be ‘shocked’ if Johnson brings Rodgers back in 2025,” Cimini wrote.

Rodgers, who turns 41 years old in less than two weeks, does have one year left on his contract with the Jets at a $23.5 million cap charge, but making it easy to part ways with the four-time NFL MVP is none of his salary is guaranteed, per Cimini.

Cimini wasn’t the only one to report that the Jets could have a new quarterback next season. SNY’s Connor Hughes wrote “sources told SNY that the team prefers to move on from Aaron Rodgers, too.”

A season that started with Super Bowl aspirations turned into a complete dumpster fire for the Jets, who own a pitiful 3-8 record. Rodgers is part of New York’s inept play as he’s having one of the worst seasons of his 20-year NFL career. Rodgers is completing just 63.4% of his passes for 2,442 yards with 17 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

If Rodgers is indeed on his way out, it means the Jets will have to start completely over at the quarterback position. There aren’t any marquee free agents to fill that void unless New York wants to have a reunion with Sam Darnold. The Jets probably will look to the draft to select a young signal-caller — New York would have a top 10 pick — but it isn’t a heralded quarterback class.

Rodgers getting traded to New York in April 2023 brought the Jets plenty of promise, but it looks like it will end as a disaster for the quarterback and the franchise.
