Jerod Mayo departed the desert sitting in his hottest seat yet.

The Patriots put forth an all-encompassing embarrassment against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. It started with Mayo’s team looking flat and underprepared coming off its bye week. But it also included a viral owner’s box clip of a frustrated Jonathan Kraft before a series of finger-pointing pressers wrapped up the day at State Farm Stadium.

All told, it’s never been more difficult to justify why Mayo should keep his job as the head coach.

During the latest episode of NESN’s “Foxboro Rush” podcast, George Balekji and Travis Thomas unpacked the Week 15 dud with NESN.com’s Sean McGuire. Given what the loss entailed, all spoke about Mayo’s job security, which doesn’t feel as secure as it did entering the bye week.

“The game to me seems so secondary to all the other stuff that came out today when you look at the owner’s box video, when you look at all the postgame comments,” said McGuire, referencing Mayo’s critiques of Alex Van Pelt. “It is a train wreck. It’s a dumpster fire.”

While all three agreed Mayo should be fired, both Balekji and McGuire don’t see owner Robert Kraft making that move just yet. Instead, Van Pelt seems to be trending toward the franchise’s scapegoat, McGuire said.

“I just can’t see Jerod getting fired after the first season,” McGuire said. “And again, it pains me to say it. It’s getting more and more difficult (to justify).”
