Red Sox Reportedly ‘More Of Possibility’ To Land Star Than Yankees

The Red Sox have produced tons of smoke to this point in the offseason but very little fire.

It’s possible that could soon change.

Boston has been inching toward making a major free-agent addition for the last several weeks, but the likes of Juan Soto, Max Fried and Blake Snell all found homes elsewhere. Alex Bregman is the latest name to be added to that list of superstars receiving interest from the Red Sox, and according to recent conjecture, could soon make a new home at Fenway Park.

“(Houston has) Isaac Paredes now to play third base, if they need to,” MLB Network’s Jon Morosi said on Thursday. “… If you look at the landscape of potential fits for Bregman — Boston, yes, is a fit at second base or third, depending on how the infield is arranged. I’m getting the sense that the Red Sox are more of a possibility than the New York Yankees at the moment.”

ESPN’s David Schoenfield reported Tuesday that Boston is among seven teams in the mix for Bregman, along with the New York Mets, New York Yankees, Detroit Tigers, Philadelphia Phillies, Houston Astros and Washington Nationals.

The Red Sox and Yankees have been the frontrunners, however.

New York made the relatively large decision to trade for Cody Bellinger earlier this week, which opens up a very specific need on its roster — which can’t be filled by Bregman. Morosi reported that first base is now the top priority in The Bronx, with Christian Walker being the new focus.

Bellinger’s addition will keep Jazz Chisolm in the infield, so the need for a second and/or third baseman has been minimized.

Bregman’s best option as of right now? It’s looking like the Red Sox.
