The Boston Red Sox reportedly are among the finalists for Alex Bregman after the Astros seemingly took themselves out of the running.
Houston signed Christian Walker and acquired Isaac Paredes from the Chicago Cubs in the Kyle Tucker trade. With the corner infield positions filled, the Astros likely are out on Bregman and Nolan Arenado. General manager Dana Brown admitted negotiations between the club and Bregman “stalled,” which led them to pivot elsewhere in free agency. That excuse didn’t satisfy the two-time World Series champion’s agent.
“Over time, teams learn if you’re running from leadership and talent, you’re running from the ultimate goal,” Scott Boras, told The Athletic’s Chandler Rome on Monday night.
Boras is never one to shy away from his thoughts on other teams and seemed to take a shot at Houston’s perceived World Series goals. One could believe that the super agent holds a high opinion of the Red Sox and Detroit Tigers since they’ve been linked to his client. What is clear is that Boras wasn’t happy with how negotiations with the Astros played out.
The infield market continued to heat up after the New York Yankees signed Christian Walker, so a Bregman deal could happen at the end of this month or the beginning of next month.
