FOXBORO, Mass. — The Patriots moved on from head coach Jerod Mayo after apparent dysfunction in the locker room.

The Boston Herald’s Doug Kyed on Sunday evening, shortly after the team released its statement, offered some behind-the-scenes insights from those inside the organization. It appears the on-field success was not the only reason for Robert Kraft and company deciding to pull the plug.

“Patriots players publicly stated their support for Jerod Mayo, but team sources have described a poor culture with a lack of leadership that can make demanding and decisive decisions,” Kyed wrote on X.

Mayo was hired by the Patriots in January after the organization fired Bill Belichick. The Patriots went 4-13 in his debut season, but they’re lack of on-field success was not the only cause for concern.

Mayo’s messaging with the media, which included frequent missteps and backtracks, compounded the team’s lack of on-field development.
