Signing Alex Bregman would be a monster move for the Red Sox, one that could help the club in a variety of ways for years to come.
However, Boston might be conserving its resources with hopes of making an even more substantial transaction down the road.
USA Today’s Bob Nightengale shared updates on Bregman’s free agency — among other top MLB storylines — in a column published Tuesday. The Red Sox don’t appear to be the likeliest landing spot for the star third baseman at this juncture, but that might be because the organization has a stronger interest in another premier player.
“If (Vladimir) Guerrero (Jr.) doesn’t receive an extension by spring training, he’ll test free agency,” Nightengale wrote. “If Guerrero doesn’t return to the Blue Jays, he would love to be with the Red Sox, friends say, which may be why the Red Sox are hesitant in their pursuit of Bregman.”
There very well could be a fit for Guerrero in Boston, where the 25-year-old theoretically could become the team’s full-time designated hitter in 2026. It’s also probably pretty easy for Red Sox brass to fantasize about the kind of damage the four-time All-Star could do at Fenway Park.

With a group of top-tier prospects seemingly on the cusp of their big league debuts, Boston appears to be something both powerful and sustainable. And considering Guerrero’s age and unique talents, the Red Sox might want the star slugger to be a part of it.
