Week 1 of the NFL season almost is complete, but fantasy football owners already should be starting to look ahead to which players might be available on the waiver wire ahead of Week 2.
Adding players off waivers not only is a great way to add depth to your roster, but doing so also prevents your competitors from giving depth to their squads. It works both ways.
Here are the best waiver-wire pickups for fantasy owners to pursue going into Week 2.
Quarterback: Joe Flacco, Baltimore Ravens
Flacco looked healthy Sunday after throwing for 258 yards and one touchdown with zero interceptions. His supporting cast also looked better, highlighted by the offseason addition of speedster Mike Wallace at wide receiver. Flacco won’t be a dominant fantasy quarterback, but he’s more than capable of being productive as a spot starter for bye weeks and if your No. 1 QB suffers an injury. He also plays a bad Cleveland Browns defense in Week 2.
Other quarterbacks to pursue: Carson Wentz, Philadelphia Eagles; Alex Smith, Kansas City Chiefs; Jimmy Garoppolo, New England Patriots
Running Back: James White, New England Patriots
White only is a good option in PPR leagues because he’s a quality receiver. His value is even higher with Patriots quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo under center because he’s more likely to be conservative on offense than an experienced pro like Tom Brady. White tallied five receptions for 40 yards Sunday night, making him a decent flex play for Week 2 in deeper leagues.
Other running backs to pursue: Rob Kelley, Washington Redskins; Darren Sproles, Eagles; Spencer Ware, Chiefs; Christine Michael, Seattle Seahawks; Tevin Coleman, Atlanta Falcons
Wide Receiver: Will Fuller, Houston Texans
Fuller lived up to his high expectations Sunday by tallying a game-high 107 yards and one touchdown on five catches. He won’t face many double teams with defenses more concerned about elite wideout DeAndre Hopkins, so it shouldn’t be a surprise if the Notre Dame product is one of the more consistent rookie receivers of the season. Fuller should be owned and started in all leagues.
Other wide receivers to target: Tajae Sharpe, Tennessee Titans; Chris Hogan, Patriots; Cole Beasley, Dallas Cowboys; Travis Benjamin, San Diego Chargers; Mike Wallace, Ravens; Willie Snead, New Orleans Saints
Tight End: Kyle Rudolph, Minnesota Vikings
Rudolph hasn’t lived up to expectations from fantasy owners the last few seasons, but he started 2016 off well with four receptions for 65 yards Sunday. The Vikings have a better group of receivers than people realize, and Rudolph’s sure-handedness and size (6-foot-5, 265 pounds) makes him a solid target in the red zone. He’s not a bad Tier 2 or Tier 3 tight end in most leagues.
Other tight ends to pursue: C.J. Uzomah, Cincinnati Bengals; Jacob Tamme, Falcons
