Packers’ Eddie Lacy Reportedly Needs Ankle Surgery, Will Head To IR

It appears the Green Bay Packers were wise to add another running back earlier this week.

Packers running back Eddie Lacy needs surgery on his ankle and will be placed on injured reserve, ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter reported Thursday, citing a source. The team still doesn’t know if Lacy’s surgery will be season-ending, per Schefter.

Lacy suffered the injury during Green Bay’s Week 5 win over the Detroit Lions and tried to play through it in a Week 6 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. Apparently the ankle got worse, prompting the Packers to to acquire running back Knile Davis in a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs on Tuesday. With running back James Starks also sidelined, Green Bay will have to rely on Davis and Don Jackson, who the Packers reportedly promoted from the practice squad. Wide receivers Ty Montgomery and Randall Cobb, who have both been used in the backfield on occasion, also could see snaps at running back.

Lacy’s injury is a disappointing setback for the fourth-year veteran, who was averaging a career-high 5.1 yards per carry through five games played. While he has yet to score a touchdown, Lacy compiled 360 rushing yards on just 71 attempts, his best performance coming in a 103-yard performance on 17 carries in a Week 3 win over the Detroit Lions.

The Packers will have to adjust quickly to life without Lacy, though, as they take on the NFC North rival Chicago Bears on Thursday night.
