All of Monday’s optimism regarding contract talks between the Boston Celtics and 23-year-old point guard Rajon Rondo quickly turned sour on Tuesday morning. According to Yahoo Sports, the two sides are too far apart to reach an agreement.

That means Rondo will become a restricted free agent at the end of the season.

The Celtics still have until Saturday to sign Rondo to a contract, though his agent, Bill Duffy, appeared to be moving on.

“We’re not going to do an extension right now,” Duffy told Yahoo. “The conversation has been cordial. We’ve been talking the last couple of weeks. There is a difference between the perception of him in their eyes and our eyes. With that being said, the focus is on Rajon to have a fantastic season and concentrate on winning a championship.”

The Celtics will have the opportunity to match any offer made to Rondo next offseason.
