In a season filled with tough break after tough break, there is at least a bit of good news for Jason Varitek.

Red Sox manager Terry Francona said before Saturday's game that the catcher was told on Friday that he likely would not suffer the same setbacks that Dustin Pedroia faced in his recovery.

What [Dr. Robert Anderson] basically said was that he doesn't feel that Jason can hurt that foot, even when he feels some discomfort. Which is good," Francona said.

The manager said there is still no specific timetable for Varitek's return, and that it won't be in the very near future.

"Now, Tek's not able to play," Francona said. "He's able to advance forward and continue his progression. He's just not quite ready to play in a game yet. But the really good part of that was that if he feels some discomfort, neither doctor felt like he was putting himself in jeopardy. I think Tek felt pretty relieved by that."

Francona also updated backup catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia's status. While the results of the blood work "still has not come back," Saltalamacchia will remain in the hospital until Monday, according to Francona.

"It's a little bit longer than we originally anticipated — the antibiotics took a little bit longer to kind of get going," Francona said. "Saying that, he's actually doing a lot better [Saturday]. It's more localized and he's feeling better, but it did take a little bit longer to kick in."

Saltalamacchia was placed on the disabled list on Thursday with an infection in his leg.
