The Red Sox may not have a shot in the August version of the Adam Dunn sweepstakes, but that doesn’t mean they are done with trying to add a slugging first baseman.
Boston has shown interest in acquiring former Blue Jays, Marlins and Mets first baseman Carlos Delgado, sources have told ESPN.com.
Delgado hasn’t played a game since May 10, 2009. The 38-year-old has 473 home runs, a .929 OPS and 2,038 hits in 17 big league seasons.
"We've been talking to a handful of teams who have interest in Carlos," Delgado’s agent, David Sloane, told ESPN.com. "I expect that he will be signed by as early as next week."
Delgado, a left-handed hitter, could platoon at first base with Mike Lowell now that Kevin Youkilis is officially out for the season.
"He's going to need a minor league rehab assignment," Sloane told ESPN.com. "He has been working out, but he needs to get his timing down and only live pitching can solve that."
