Johnny Damon Back in Free Agency Pool, Would Welcome Return to Yankees

If Johnny Damon ever had any hopes of redeeming himself in the eyes of Red Sox Nation, he can forget that now.

While the former beloved "idiot" began digging his Boston grave the day he left for New York, his latest comment can almost guarantee that even the most devoted Damon fans will be booing him should he ever return to Fenway Park.

According to a report by the New York Post, Damon said he would "love the opportunity" to go back to the Bronx and play with the Yankees. He also added that it would "be very exciting to go back there."

This coming after Damon refused the opportunity to return to Boston. When the Red Sox made a claim on Damon off waivers back in August, he turned down the offer, claiming his teammates needed him in Detroit.

Maybe his teammates needed him then, but now the Tigers' organization is singing a different tune. Damon was told recently that Detroit will not be requiring his services at DH next season, and will be looking more toward an Adam Dunn-type hitter.

"They told me they are looking for a prototypical type DH like Adam Dunn," Damon said, according to the New York Post. "They said they need that type of bat in the middle of order. I am a No. 1 or 2 guy, so . . ."

Now Damon is facing free agency, and hoping to once again don the pinstripes. One can only imagine the welcome Damon would receive on opening day at Fenway Park should his dreams become a reality.
