Briere was drafted No. 24 overall in the 1996 draft after playing three years for the Drummondville Voltigeurs in the QMJHL. He started and ended his first professional season with the same team in the AHL, and was awarded the Dudley "Red" Garrett Memorial Award for the league's top rookie at the end of the season.
The fiery center recorded 92 points in his first season in the AHL, scoring 36 goals in 68 games played. He played a five-game stint up with the NHL club in that season as well, scoring one goal in that time.
Since then, Briere has gone on to play for two other teams in the NHL, and has played five years in the Philadelphia system.
