Midway through a rebound season where Mets shortstop Jose Reyes is returning to his usual form, the three-time All-Star said he wants to wait until the end of the season to negotiate a new deal.
According to ESPN.com, Reyes isn't looking for anything to distract him from this season, and he isn't going to talk about his impending contract situation.
"Right now I don't want any distractions," Reyes said. "I just want to continue to play. We're going to have plenty of time in the offseason to make this happen."
Mets general manager Sandy Alderson is a bit more impatient to get negotiations started, as he attempts to gauge what Reyes wants before the trade deadline, when the Mets would have the last opportunity to get something for Reyes if he were to walk.
Alderson also admitted that if the Mets are sellers at the trade deadline, Reyes still might not be available, unlike other pricey veterans such as Carlos Beltran and Francisco Rodriguez.
Negotiations could get sticky if that's the route the Mets try to go, especially after the comments made by Mets owner Fred Wilpon in regards to Reyes.
"[Reyes] thinks he's going to get Carl Crawford money. He's had everything wrong with him. He won't get it," Wilpon recently said in a controversial article in The New Yorker.
However, with the way Reyes has been playing, leading the NL in batting average, runs, hits and triples, he could very well be worth Crawford money.
