Seemingly the only thing keeping the Chicago Cubs from holding a news conference to introduce Theo Epstein as their next general manager is the little matter of compensation for the Red Sox. Apparently, the teams are pretty hung up over that part even as the Cubs work to find the right pieces.
ESPN.com reported Thursday night that Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts has passed along a list of players to his baseball operations staff to evaluate as potential compensation to acquire Epstein. Because the Red Sox general manager has a year left on his contract the Sox want compensation, and that appears to be the main reason the deal isn't done yet.
That same report indicated that negotiatons are moving at a "snail's pace."
The Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo tweeted on Thursday night that the two teams are "talking but not much progress on the compensation."
