Brandon McCarthy Back on Twitter, as Brain Injury Apparently Hasn’t Affected Sense of Humor

Brandon McCarthy suffered one of the scariest moments that can happen to any athlete on Wednesday.

He was beaned in the head by an Erik Aybar line drive.

In the days since, it was reported that McCarthy had suffered a potentially life-threatening injury, and, although he initially walked off the field under his own power, he underwent surgery to treat a fractured skull, epidural hemorrhage and a brain contusion.

Among the tributes to McCarthy were the A's drawing a No. 32 on the O.co Coliseum mound, and keeping a jersey in the dugout.

McCarthy has largely been known during his career as a very talented pitcher who's had a hard time staying healthy, but he's also gained a reputation for his Twitter wit, often trading jokes with his wife, Amanda McCarthy, via the social networking service.

Although Mrs. McCarthy reported that her husband was still in considerable pain to the point of it affecting his ability to speak, suffice to say it was a good sign that McCarthy reappeared on Twitter early Saturday morning, first cracking a joke about children's Tylenol and then posting his fantasy team lineup.

It's nice to see that the traumatic brain injury hasn't affected McCarthy's personality any, so hopefully the 29-year-old right-hander is on his way to making a full recovery.
