There were plenty of awesome plays in college football on New Year’s Day. But nothing beats a fat guy touchdown.
In the third quarter of the Cotton Bowl between No. 5 Baylor and No. 8 Michigan State, quarterback Bryce Petty dropped back to pass. As you might expect, the Spartans didn’t think to cover the massive 390-pound man who waddled down the middle of the field. So Petty connected with said 390-pound man, who rumbled into the end zone for the 18-yard touchdown.

That behemoth of a football player is LaQuan McGowan, a junior guard on Baylor’s offensive line whose heroic efforts would make a certain Mercer lineman proud.
McGowan’s fantastic score gave the Bears a 20-point lead, but it was all Spartans after that. Michigan State rattled off 21 unanswered points — and nearly destroyed Baylor’s kicker in the process — to earn a comeback 42-41 win.
In our minds, though, McGowan still is the MVP.
