BOSTON — Jake Peavy gave David Ortiz an early retirement gift Tuesday night at Fenway Park. The Red Sox slugger returned the favor by launching it 442 feet into the right field bleachers.

Even better than the three-run bomb? Peavy’s reaction.

The homer dug the San Francisco Giants pitcher into a deeper, 4-0 hole against the Red Sox. Peavy was well aware of the season Ortiz is having before he hit the mound Tuesday, too.
“I don’t know how he’s walking away,” Peavy told the San Francisco Chronicle. “I want to give him four and send him to first. But he’s got some guys around him. The way he’s swinging the bat, he’s certainly not swinging like a guy who’s retiring. He’s swinging like the All-Star he’s always been.
“David’s as big-time of a player as I’ve ever played with. He has such a unique, larger-than-life personality. His preparation on a daily basis sets him apart. Certain guys are cut out for big moments. No. 34 is one of them.”
Of course, by “four” Peavy meant four balls: a free pass to first base. But Ortiz and the Red Sox will take four bases any day.
