With a void created on the blue line from the trade of Aaron Ward to the Hurricanes, the Bruins added to their defensive depth by signing defenseman Derek Morris to a one-year, $3.3 million contract, NESN.com's James Murphy reports.
Morris, 30, spent the majority of the the 2008-09 season with the Coyotes before being traded to the Rangers at the trade deadline. With the Coyotes, Morris scored five goals and added seven assists for 12 points in 57 games. In 18 games with the Rangers, he recorded eight assists and 16 penalty minutes.
A first-round pick of the Flames in in 1996, Morris has 76 goals and 264 assists in 793 games. He has five assists in 14 career playoff games.
