The Canadiens started their week off right, re-signing winger Gregory Stewart to a one-year deal. The Record reports that it is believed to be worth about $500,000, but Stewart and agent Richard Evans declined to discuss financial details.

Evans did indicate that he expects his client to spend the year in Montreal rather than in Hamilton with the team's American Hockey League affiliate, where he has spent the majority of his time since the Habs selected him in the eighth round of the 2004 draft.

"He's going to have to clear waivers if they want to send him to the American Hockey League," Evans told The Record. "We don't foresee that happening."

Last season, the 23-year-old was called up from Hamilton on Feb. 17 and played in 20 games for the Canadiens, averaging eight and a half minutes of ice time and registering one assist.

With the Bulldogs, he tallied 10 goals and seven assists in 69 games — and he expects to make that kind of impact on the new-look Canadiens in 2009-10.

"We're hoping he puts up some half-decent numbers this year and plays his physical game," Evans said. "And then, we'll do [contract negotiations] all again next year."
