Finding a Cure, One Scoop at a Time Ice cream, Red Sox, fun times and fund-raising — sounds like a pretty spectacular summer day in Boston to me.

The Red Sox wives, the Red Sox, FedEx and multiple ice cream vendors teamed up this summer to bring the 27th annual Scooperbowl — the nation’s largest all-you-can-eat ice cream festival — back to Boston to raise money for the Jimmy Fund.

“I just can’t think of a better idea,” volunteer Bertica Lowell, the wife of Red Sox slugger Mike Lowell said. “I think everybody wins and the companies get a chance to promote their products and the crowd gets to come out and enjoy some good ice cream and obviously with the Jimmy Fund, all of the proceeds go to that.”

This summer, 34,886 people participated in the event, helping Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber raise $241,913.

“Who doesn’t love ice cream?” asked Jacque Francona, the wife of Red Sox manager Terry Francona. ”It’s a great way to get kids out here and it’s one of many things that we participate in for the Jimmy Fund and it’s really fun.”
