New York lost more than Saturday's preseason affair to Jay Culter and the Bears — it also lost reserve defensive tackle Jay Alford en route to a 17-3 defeat at the hands of Chicago.

Alford, who went down in the third quarter of Saturday's game after getting run over by the Bears' Garrett Wolfe, hopes the injury is little more than a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee. The third-year Penn State product was carted off the field after sustaining the blow.

"Any time a guy gets carted off it seems pretty bad," fellow defensive tackle Barry Cofield told the New York Post. "I heard a couple of guys who were on the field with him say he didn't look good, so we were definitely scared."

Alford reappeared on the bench for the fourth quarter, always a good sign.

"Just to see him walk back out there was a good feeling," Cofield said.

The DT is scheduled to undergo an MRI to determine the severity of the injury.

The Giants also lost linebacker Danny Clark in the first quarter, when he got cleated in the chin and needed five stitches.
