Mets’ Wright Could Miss Rest of Season After Taking a Pitch to the Head

Just when you thought things couldn't get any worse for the Mets.

Oh wait. We've been saying that for months.

This time, though, it's actually true, because on Sunday, the club learned it will be without third baseman David Wright indefinitely — and manager Jerry Manuel said there is a possibility he may miss the remainder of the season, pending further testing.

"I do believe we have to be cautious with this, and we will be," Manuel told ESPN.com. "There's no doubt in my mind."

The four-time All-Star took a 94-mph fastball to the head from San Francisco's Matt Cain in the fourth inning of Saturday night's game. He was immediately taken to the hospital and diagnosed with a concussion, and he was discharged on Sunday afternoon but must take time off to recover from post-concussion symptoms.

Cain's pitch hit Wright just above the brim of his helmet, knocking it off as Wright crumpled to the ground. He lay motionless in the batter's box for over a minute before he was taken to the clubhouse, where he was examined by the team's medical staff. Mets spokesman Jay Horwitz told ESPN.com he had a CT scan at the Hospital for Special Surgery.

The Mets lost 5-4 in 10 innings on Saturday night.
