Beckett Downplays Concerns Over Back Spasms, Plans to Make Next Start
Jon Lester and Josh Beckett picked the worst possible time to get injured.

Luckily, neither of them plans to be out for long.

On Tuesday afternoon, Beckett told Boston.com that the Red Sox' travel schedule is to blame for the back problems that caused him to be scratched from Monday's start. He also said he has no plans to miss Saturday's start against Cleveland.

"Absolutely I think I'll make my next start," the ace said. "I think if I had to, I don't think we're going to need this, but I could go sooner if I needed to than Saturday. I think right now we're just kind of looking at Saturday to hopefully set things up."

Earlier on Tuesday, manager Terry Francona indicated that Beckett was scratched at the first sign of discomfort for precautionary reasons, and Beckett confirmed that the back injury is no big deal.

"It was just something you wake up with," he said. "It wasn't like I felt anything when I was throwing. You just wake up and you're locked up.

"Three different crappy beds on the road, one getting in at 5 o'clock in the morning. I just don't think that all that stuff really sat well with my back. It was unfortunate that you wake up on the day you start and don't really feel well enough to be able to do that. I think we made the right decision. I feel a lot better today."
