The Giants will be making a run for the Lombardi Trophy in 2010 without defensive tackle Jay Alford.

After taking a hit during the third quarter of an Aug. 22 loss to Chicago, Alford underwent season-ending knee surgery to repair a torn MCL and a partially-torn ACL on Friday. The injury leaves New York in somewhat of a tight spot, as linemen Fred Robbins and Barry Cofield are also recovering from knee injuries.

"That's a blow to our team, too," Giants head coach Tom Coughlin told The Associated Press. "That's a guy who had played well and served evidence that he was going to play well."

Alford also served as the snapper on extra points and field goals. Those duties will now be assigned to longsnapper Zak DeOssie.

The 25-year old has played in 16 games for the Giants in each of the past two seasons, registering 11 tackles and 3 1/2 sacks. He started in three games last year, and in 2007 — during Super Bowl XLII — he registered a key sack on Tom Brady, resulting in a 10-yard loss with 19 seconds remaining.
