NFL Sends Memo to Players Reminding Them to Avoid PEDs

What is the most common excuse the infamous members of The List have used when informed that they had tested positive for performance-enhancing substances?

"I didn't realize that what I was taking was a PED," they say — or some variation on that theme.

So it makes sense that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith are being proactive with their own league this season. That's why players received this friendly reminder, according to ESPN.com:

• You are responsible for what is in your body. A positive test will not be excused because you used a supplement that contained a banned substance.
• If you take any supplements other than those certified under our Sports Nutrition Label Certification Program, you do so at your own risk. Supplements are not tested or regulated and often have ingredients that will cause you to test positive.
• Weight-loss supplements such as StarCaps are particularly risky. You should not take them.
• If you have questions, you should call Dr. John Lombardo. 

Lombardo is the administrator of the league's policy on steroids and related substances.

If only Bud Selig had thought of doing that.

Though Saints defensive ends Charles Grant and Will Smith used StarCaps and subsequently tested positive for PEDs, they will not be suspended because Vikings defensive tackles Kevin Williams and Pat Williams also tested positive for the supplement and were not suspended.
