Patriots Cut Greg Lewis, Claim Bret Lockett Off Waivers

The Patriots cut offseason acquisition Greg Lewis on Monday and claimed defensive back Bret Lockett.

Lockett, who signed with Cleveland as a free agent out of UCLA, was waived by the Browns. He played in 48 of 50 games with the Bruins, starting 11 games as a senior and registering 61 tackles.

Unfortunately, Lewis was the odd man out when New England needed to clear space for Lockett on the 53-man roster. The Patriots acquired Lewis from Philadelphia — where he spent all six years of his professional career — in March of 2009. Lewis played in 90 games in six seasons and started in 23 of them, recording 127 receptions for 1,699 yards and seven touchdowns.
