The Red Sox activated right-handed pitcher Fernando Cabrera to the active roster prior to Tuesday's game against Toronto. First baseman Aaron Bates was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket and placed on the 60-day disabled list with a left ankle sprain in a corresponding roster move.

Cabrera was designated for assignment on Aug. 21 and outrighted to Pawtucket on Aug. 27. The 27-year-old posted a 4.50 ERA with seven strikeouts in four games with Boston, allowing two runs in four innings. With Pawtucket, he went 0-3 with 22 saves and a 1.71 ERA in 43 games. He finished second among all International League saves leaders.

In 129 games with Cleveland, Baltimore and Boston, Cabrera has posted a career record of 8-7 with a 5.00 ERA. The Red Sox signed him as a minor league free agent on Dec. 18, 2008.

Bates made his major league debut with Boston on July 6 and went 4-for-11 with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs in five games. The 25-year-old played in 128 games between Pawtucket and Double-A Portland in 2009 and hit .268 with 23 doubles, 12 homers and 57 RBIs.
