Canadiens Sign Defenseman Marc-Andre Bergeron to One-Year Deal

The Canadiens added depth to their defense by inking Marc-Andre Bergeron to a one-year deal on Tuesday. With injuries to Andrei Markov and Ryan O'Byrne, Bergeron will fill a much-needed spot on defense for the Habs.

Markov, who is out with an ankle injury, could be out longer than the four months originally projected, NESN.com's James Murphy reports. The Canadiens are reportedly talking to the Lightning, Avalanche and Oilers about acquiring a defenseman as all three teams have a surplus of blue-liners.

Bergeron, 28, scored 14 goals and 18 assists in 72 games for the Wild last season. In 339 career games with the Oilers, Islanders, Ducks and Wild, the Quebec native has scored 62 goals and added 98 assists for 160 points.
