The Giants traded tight end Mike Matthews to the Patriots in September in exchange for a conditional 2011 draft pick. But on Tuesday the Patriots cut Matthews, costing the Giants the eventual draft pick, the New York Daily News reports.

According to Bill Belichick, Matthews was cut before the unknown conditions were met, which prevents the Giants from receiving the pick.

Matthews did not make the Giants this season after playing in all 16 regular season games the last two years, starting 11 of them. This season he played in four games with the Patriots before being released.
