Though some reports called for the Patriots to sign 40-year-old linebacker Junior Seau this week, it appears as though it won't happen until next week.

League sources say the Patriots will put off the signing of Seau because he would not have been active for this Sunday's game in Denver had he signed this week, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported via Twitter.

The 19-year NFL veteran expressed interest in returning to the Patriots last week, and the media storm has been in full force ever since. Head coach Bill Belichick confirmed on the radio on Monday that Seau had worked out for the Pats last week and a move was reported to be imminent. Now it will have to wait at least a few more days.

Seau would likely not be called upon to carry a heavy load, but he could prove extremely valuable at middle linebacker as second-year starter Jerod Mayo makes his return from a right knee injury.

"Just as far as being a leader, and a leadership role, he's a great guy," Mayo told the Globe on Wednesday. "I had the opportunity to play with him last year and he really helped me learn the game."

In 2007, Seau played in all 16 games for the Patriots, recording 74 tackles and three interceptions. He also recorded a sack in the AFC Championship against San Diego.
