Kevin Towers was fired by the San Diego Padres this month, but the former general manager's friends are in high places, so finding a job won't be hard.

According to Boston.com, the Red Sox have told Towers he can work for the team if he wants. Towers said he plans to take a couple of months off and think about his future.

The Web site points out that Towers' friends in the game include Red Sox GM Theo Epstein, Yankees GM Brian Cashman and Jed Hoyer, who is reportedly "close" to assuming Towers' vacant position in San Diego.

Towers took over as San Diego's GM in 1995, leading to four division titles — most recently in 2006 — and one World Series appearance.
