Rex Ryan’s Tone Changes After Monday Night Loss to Dolphins

At the beginning of the season, Rex Ryan and his Jets spoke with boastful confidence. Following a 31-27 loss to the Dolphins on Monday night, Ryan's swagger has quieted down a bit.

"It was a complete embarrassment by our defense and by me, obviously we need to prepare better," Ryan told reporters after the game.

Even though his team's defense allowed a season-high 413 yards, Ryan didn't place any of the blame on his players.

"I didn't have the defense prepared the way they should have been and I take full responsibility for that," he said. "I've never been involved in a game like that in my life. Our offense did tremendously and gave us every opportunity to win the game.

As the Dolphins drove 70 yards down the field, draining the clock from 5:12 to :06, Ryan said he "thought about using timeouts, but I said, 'They are not scoring.' I was wrong."

Miami quarterback Chad Henne, who hadn't had a performance worthy of national headlines since his days at Michigan, threw for 241 yards and two touchdowns.

"We made that quarterback look like Dan Marino," Ryan said of Henne.

But while the immediate bad news for the Jets is that their record now stands at 3-2, the good news is that the next three weeks have them playing Buffalo and Oakland before a rematch with the Dolphins in New Jersey before their bye week.

Ryan's mood after that game could be an indication of the success or failure of the Jets' season.
