Tim Wakefield's Red Sox career has been historic, and the 43-year-old knuckleballer doesn't want an unceremonious ending.
With hopes of returning to the rotation next season, Wakefield is set to undergo surgery to repair a herniated disc in his back on Wednesday, WEEI.com reports.
According to the report, doctors believe Wakefield will be able to recover in time to pitch next season, barring any complications.
"Wake is someone that is in our plans, and we hope he makes starts for us next year and is a member of the rotation," Theo Epstein said on Monday. "We haven't sat down and finalized anything. Obviously, we want to see how the surgery goes, and then both sides will sit down and talk."
WEEI also reports that Nick Green, who missed the end of the season due to a slipped disc in his back, will be examined next week, with surgery remaining a possibility.
