Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers said it best: The waiting is the hardest part. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman can relate.

The Yankees are searching for an outfielder, but Cashman denies that they will wait on Johnny Damon before pursuing alternatives, the Journal News reports

"I have a certain amount of money, and when I decide to spend it, I’m going to spend it," Cashman told the Journal News.

Sports Illustrated’s Jon Heyman reports the Yankees have offered Damon a one-year deal believed to be worth $5 million.

The market for Damon and other free-agent outfielders has been slow to develop. Gary Sheffield, Jermaine Dye and Jim Edmonds are among the biggest names still available with the start of spring training less than a month away.

Cashman anticipated the market being this way.

"How long it’s taking certain people to wake up and smell the coffee, that’s what surprises me," Cashman told the News. "When you get on the phone with agents, they tell you one thing, and certain agents can’t honestly believe what they’re trying to convey. Do they think I’m stupid?"

The waiting game between Cashman and Damon appears to be reaching its end.

Damon told The Newark Star-Ledger’s Mark Carig via text message that he expects to sign with a team in the next week.
