After a promising beginning, Lindsey Vonn's Olympic journey ended in disappointment.
Vonn skied out of the women's slalom on Friday afternoon after straddling a gate during the first half of her run and failing to correct her line after her outside ski slid away after a turn. It was her final event in Vancouver.
"I went out there fighting and it just wasn't my day," Vonn told The Associated Press.
The American skier took home two medals during the Olympics — one gold in her downhill event and one bronze in the super-G — but failed to finish three of her five races. Still, she is far from disappointed with the overall experience.
"I'm totally satisfied with everything I have done here," Vonn said. "I have the gold medal I came here for. Everybody had a lot of expectations of me and you just have to stay realistic. You have to keep in perspective what your goals are."
Though Vonn was expected to contend for a medal in all of her events, she battled an array of injuries throughout the games. A Feb. 2 training run left her with a bruised right shin, she dealt with back pain from a crash in Wednesday's giant slalom and she skied with a broken pinkie on Friday.
Still, despite the injuries, Vonn refused to throw in the towel before her final event on Friday.
"That's just my personality," she said. "I never want to give up."
