Olympic Hockey Bracket Could Set Up Canada-Russia Quarterfinal Matchup

Canada’s loss to the United States on Sunday night sent shock waves throughout the Great White North, and it also caused a major disruption to the Olympic hockey tournament.

As it stands now after the first round, four teams — U.S., Sweden, Russia, Finland — have automatic byes to the quarterfinals. That leaves the eight remaining teams to duke it out on Tuesday to determine who will advance.

The most intriguing matchup will be Canada-Germany, as the winner will go on to face Russia in the quarterfinals. If the Canadians win, they’ll face Russia, meaning one of those two teams won’t medal in this year’s Olympics. The Canada-Russia matchup was widely expected to be the gold-medal game, but that has obviously changed quite a bit.

The rest of the tournament will play out as follows:

Qualifying round, Tuesday, Feb. 23:

Switzerland vs. Belarus, 3 p.m. ET, winner plays United States

Canada vs. Germany, 7:30 p.m., winner plays Russia

Czech Republic vs. Latvia, 10 p.m., winner plays Finland

Slovakia vs. Norway, 12 a.m., winner plays Sweden

Quarterfinal round, Wednesday, Feb. 24:

United States vs. Switzerland/Belarus, 3 p.m.

Finland vs. Czech Republic/Latvia, 7:30 p.m.**

Sweden vs. Slovakia/Norway, 10 p.m.

Russia vs. Canada/Germany, 12 a.m.**

**If Canada beats Germany, the Canada-Russia game will be played at 7 p.m.

Semifinal round, Friday, Feb. 26:

Semifinal game No. 1, 3 p.m.

Semifinal game No. 2, 9:30 p.m.

Medal games

Bronze-medal game, Saturday, Feb. 27, 10 p.m.

Gold-medal game, Sunday, Feb. 28, 3:15 p.m.
