Report: Marc Savard Could Be Out for Year

Marc Savard‘s Grade 2 concussion could keep him off the ice for the remainder of the season, according to general manager Peter Chiarelli.

Speaking with reporters at the GM meetings in Florida, Chiarelli said he still didn’t know the long-term implications of Savard’s injury.

“We may lose a guy for the rest of the year, I don’t know,” he said, according to TSN.

Darren Dreger of TSN first made the report via Twitter.

On Tuesday morning, Chiarelli said he was still unsure of Savard’s status.

“I said I was unsure either way, but he could be [out for the year]” Chiarelli wrote in an e-mail to NESN.com’s James Murphy.

Savard was hit by Matt Cooke with 5:40 left in the third period of Sunday’s game against the Penguins. Cooke made contact with Savard’s head, and the Bruins’ forward lay motionless on the ice for several minutes before being taken off the ice by a stretcher.

Savard was later diagnosed with a Grade 2 concussion and flew to Boston on Monday. The NHL has not issued any disciplinary action on Cooke, though Colin Campbell said on Monday that he did not believe Cooke used his elbow to hit Savard.

The Bruins, currently hanging onto eighth place in the Eastern Conference playoff race, have 18 games remaining.
