Alan Embree Recalled From Triple-A Pawtucket

Alan Embree is in a Red Sox uniform for the first time since July 2005 after the left-hander was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket before Wednesday’s game in Toronto.

Embree, who had his 2009 season with Colorado cut short when a comebacker broke his leg, was 8-9 with four saves and a 4.69 ERA in 211 games with Boston from 2002 to 2005. He will wear his old No. 43 with the Sox.

In mid-March, the club sent a scout to Oregon to watch Embree pitch, and immediately signed him to a minor league contract. He went north to get more work with the PawSox and was given an April 15 deadline to be major-league ready, or he could have been released to become a free agent.

When Embree was still attempting to refine his form in the middle of the month, the club extended that deadline to April 30. In his last five appearances for Pawtucket, Embree tossed five perfect innings. Overall, he held opponents to an .083 (2-for-24) average in eight games for the PawSox.

Embree has appeared in 882 games in 16 major leagues seasons with 10 teams. He is 39-45 with 25 saves and a 4.59 ERA in his career.

To make room for Embree on the 40-man roster the club designated infielder Kevin Frandsen for assignment. Acquired in a trade with San Francisco on March 26, Frandsen is hitting .258 (16-for-62) with two home runs and four RBI in 17 games with Pawtucket.

The club also announced that right-hander Santo Luis cleared waivers and was outrighted to Double-A Portland.
