The Boston Red Sox will hold a news conference at 3 p.m. on Monday to make an announcement regarding pitcher Josh Beckett. This announcement will be aired live on NESN.
Though the team did not disclose any more information in the announcement, it has been reported over the past few weeks that Beckett and the Red Sox were closing in on a contract extension. The latest reports have said the terms would be somewhere around four years, $70 million, though nothing is official. As recently as Sunday night, an ESPN.com report said that talks were in the "final stages" and that there would not be any "special language" that would protect the Red Sox if Beckett were to injure his shoulder.
Beckett made the start Sunday night for the Red Sox, but he got roughed up in just 4 2/3 innings of work. Making his second consecutive Opening Day start for the Red Sox, Beckett gave up five runs (all earned) on eight hits and three walks, and he struck out just one batter. It was his lowest strikeout total in a start since June 14, 2007, when he struck out just one against the Colorado Rockies.
