Shorthanded Bruins Battling for Their Postseason Lives With Just Three Games to Go Some say the Bruins only managed to get one point out of Washington on Monday night in their overtime loss to the Capitals.

Others have said that the B's stole a point.

Either way, these Washington Capitals are a force to be reckoned with. The Caps have the most points in the league (118) and boast one of the most potent offenses in the game. Plus, Monday's tilt was on their home ice, in front of a sellout crowd of No. 8 jersey-wearing fans and the Bruins were shorthanded, with three of their top six defensemen (Dennis Seidenberg – wrist, Mark Stuart – pinkie, Andrew Ference – groin) out of the lineup.

The fact that the Bruins managed to get a point and actually control the pace throughout much of the game can be classified as a small miracle. The only problem: the B’s desperately needed two points, not one, and will fight to get into the NHL’s Elite Eight in the East.

This is a Bruins team battling for their postseason lives. Had this game occurred three months earlier in a less-than-dire situation, the results would have been dramatically different. You would have most likely seen the league’s best offense and power play stick it to Boston early on in the game. But credit Boston for being fighters, and for holding on for dear life.

There are three games remaining in the regular season. At the conclusion of Tuesday night’s NHL contests, the Bruins maintained their eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, three points ahead of the New York Rangers, who lost to Buffalo. The clock couldn’t be ticking more loudly right now for Boston, and they’re certainly feeling the heat.

After Monday’s loss, the vocal veteran, winger Mark Recchi, applauded his team’s efforts, but knows more work needs to be done in order to continue their season past next Sunday.

"That’s a big point for us regardless," he said. "You come in here on the road and get a point against a pretty good team. That’s something we can continue to build on. It spreads us a little farther from the Rangers and Philly, and gets us a point closer to Montreal. So anything helps at this point. We’ve got to go home and do some work at home on Thursday. We’ve got to get some things going at home."

Thursday night at the TD Garden against Buffalo. Saturday afternoon at the TD garden against Carolina. Sunday afternoon, the regular season concludes in Washington.

With three games in four days, it could be a very exciting finish to the regular season, with some of the most pressure-packed games you’ll witness this season.

But if Boston cools off, then things in this town could get very ugly.
