The Boston Red Sox have dominated NESN.com's Boston Biggest Sports Legends bracket thus far. Of the 32 legends to advance to the second round, 14 are either current or former Sox players and managers.
Of those 14, six pulled off first-round upsets, including 13-seeds Terry Francona and Cy Young.
By comparison, the Bruins have seven figures remaining, the Celtics five and the Patriots five. Brockton boxer Rocky Marciano is the lone remaining athlete not tied to the big four sports, having knocked off Johnny Pesky in the first round.
Some of the Red Sox face difficult second-round matchups. Nomar Garciaparra is up against top seed Tom Brady, Dwight Evans meets top seed Bobby Orr, and Curt Schilling is facing off with Celtics legendary coach Red Auerbach, a No. 2 seed.
Additionally, some current players face some of the club's all-time greats in the second round. Against such odds, a little lobbying cannot hurt.
"I would truly be honored if the fans chose me over Yaz," said Tim Wakefield, who meets No. 2 seed Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski. "That would be saying something."
Jason Varitek meets top seed Ted Williams, who routed Nancy Kerrigan in the opening round. The Red Sox catcher was happy to get past Patriots great Troy Brown in the first round, but knows he is up against it in the matchup with Williams.
"Thankfully you get that respect," Varitek said. "I feel real appreciative. I appreciate the fact that you are brought up in that light."
When asked if Williams would be able to knock him off, Varitek gave a nod to the Splendid Splinter, considered by many the best player in franchise history.
"I would hope so," Varitek said.
David Ortiz meets Terry O'Reilly in a tough second-round matchup. Francona, who upset Johnny Bucyk, will see if the slipper fits when he squares off with former Patriots kicker Adam Vinatieri. And in one of the juiciest pairings of the second round, Jim Rice and Carlton Fisk meet in a 4-5 contest.
Voting for the second round lasts until May 10.
