Former Rhode Island Senator Lincoln Chafee Questions Legitimacy of Curt Schilling’s Bloody Sock in 2004

Lincoln Chafee should stick to politics.

According to USA Today, the Rhode Island gubernatorial candidate and former senator opposes the state’s $75 million bid to lure former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling’s video game company, 38 Studios, away from Massachusetts. Chafee believes it’s too much money to give to a company without a proven track record.

That’s fine. But Chafee’s remarks about Schilling possibly faking the “bloody sock” incident in the 2004 ALCS weren’t kosher.

"I think it goes back to the principal, Curt Schilling, and the trust that [state economic officials] have in him to deliver," Chafee said in an interview on WPRO-AM. "I just remember his own teammates didn't like him. I remember one of his teammates said he painted his sock, the bloody sock, he painted it.”

Chafee later released a statement debunking the severity of his comment.

"Senator Chafee regrets that what he intended as an offhand reference to published reports about the bloody sock has deflected attention from the crux of this issue," his campaign said in a statement.

Sounds like Chafee decided it was time to put his own sock in his mouth.
